Teachers & Schools: Stop only talking about AI & start using AI

When I first read that ‘AI will make teachers more human’, I didn’t expect the depth of the impact. What I learned from ‘AI Integration in Skills & Competency-Based Curriculum’[i], I could appreciate the quote by Heramb Kulkarni,

Researcher and Director at the Council for Creative Education, Finland & University of Jyväskylä, Finland. Teacher readiness is one of the important factors influencing the efficacy of AI integration in education. AI can have an impact on Indian school education by providing personalized learning and improving teacher efficiency.[ii]

It is observed that there is a gap between the skill sets required by numerous industries that rely on AI and the current capabilities of employees working in those industries present a challenge. Many organizations are now using automation and software robots to reshape operations more efficiently. This helps especially by reducing routine tasks. Chatbots are popular since they can provide interaction between humans and robots across different sectors. In education, AI can be used to develop future skills.[iii] I came to know that there are more than 111 AI tools and apps that are useful for the education sector.

It is important to note that according to the ‘Finnish national core curriculum for basic education’, the aims set for transversal competences include the following abilities[iv]. Transversal competences or transferable skills are abilities that can be applied across different subjects. Since these abilities span different disciplines, they are referred to as transversal.

  • Thinking and learning to learn

  • Cultural competence, interaction, and self-expression

  • Taking care of oneself and managing daily life

  • Multiliteracy

  • ICT competence

  • Working life competence and entrepreneurship

  • Participation, involvement, and building a sustainable future

Since the Information, Communication & Technology (ICT) competence is one of the important abilities, teachers and schools need to adopt newer technologies like AI.

Let me know your thoughts.
