Curating A Sustainable Mindset

Sustainability is a journey of looking inside oneself with a purpose over profit!

All these times we have been talking about sustainability as a tool to reduce, reuse or recycle in the best interest of the environment.

I was just wondering if we can now look at the word sustainable as an attitude, as a mindset. Let it be the way we perceive things, the choices we make and the actions we take. All these then lead us to an ecosystem which, if we want, can be curated as a balance between mankind and the environment.

In the role of an educator, we can harness this attitude on three strong pillars

  1. Empathy

  2. Resilience

  3. System approach

Empathy - This is very easy… just nurture yourself as

  • An active listener.

  • Avoid being judgmental.

  • Go more for open-ended questions to have healthier discussions.

Resilience - Follow the idiom ‘ Change is the only constant, let us adapt! ‘

  • Talk to students beyond studies and develop a strong network!

  • Celebrate small victories!

  • Be a continuous learner

System approach -  Transit from person to process, where even a small action can lead to a big change!

  • Set clear class objectives

  • Give tasks to every child in class. Make them feel a part of the system

  • Periodically reflect to flourish further

Let us begin our class by lending a listening ear for the first 5 mins.

Allow our children to express themselves and then create actionable plans for them to reach their goals as we celebrate small wins along the way.

This would enable us to take one step ahead towards developing a sustainable mindset, thus paving the path for a sustainable humanity!
